‘I want a warrant for the arrest of Noshir Kilachand.’

Joint Commissioner Jatkar blinked across his desk at Sansi. ‘You think an arrest warrant is justified now? Why not bring him in for questioning, like Coyarjee?’

‘Because I think I can get through to Kilachand faster this way. Coyarjee is a lot tougher than Kilachand. Coyarjee didn’t turn a hair when he saw the body. Kilachand could hardly stand up, he was so sick. In his own way, I think Coyarjee is smarter than Kilachand. He’s still holding something back — and I think I can get at him faster if I crack Kilachand first. An arrest warrant will help me do that. It will shock Kilachand to the core.’

‘It will ruin his career, you know. It will be in all the papers. He will be finished.’

‘He’s been withholding important evidence in a murder inquiry, sir.’

‘What evidence?’

‘That he was a sexual partner of the murder victim. He might deny that he knew the body at the lake was Nayak, but he’d be lying, just like Coyarjee.

‘You don’t think either Coyarjee or Kilachand killed Nayak?’

‘No, sir.’ Sansi gave Jatkar a summary of Ranjana’s forensic findings, including the information about the blond pubic hair.

‘But you think Kilachand is involved?’

‘I’m certain of it sir. Kilachand and Coyarjee shared the same lover. Coyarjee won’t admit it but he pimped for Nayak at Film City. He supplied prostitutes to homosexual cronies like Kilachand. I think it’s more than likely that Coyarjee introduced Nayak to some foreign visitor at Film City, a European or an American … and that’s the man I’m looking for. I’m quite sure that both Kilachand and Coyarjee know who he is.’

Jatkar toyed absently with his bottom lip. ‘Old Noshir a closet queen, eh?’ he murmured. ‘The crafty old beggar called me so it would make him look all the more innocent. And all the time he was trying to make sure that when an investigation started, he would have a line open to me so he could try and keep it quiet. I’m surprised I haven’t had another call from him.’

‘I don’t think he knows yet, sir.’

‘It won’t be long.’

‘That’s why I want your approval to apply for an arrest warrant, sir. I want to pull him in today. Now.’

‘You can’t arrest a man for sneaking around and telling lies, Sansi. The entire city would be under arrest.’

‘I only want the warrant on the withholding of evidence, sir. That will enable me to hang onto him for a while. If he’s involved, as I know he is, a conspiracy charge will follow.’

Jatkar nodded. ‘I don’t want you to apply for the warrant yet,’ he decided. ‘Bring him in for questioning. That’s fair. If you get something concrete, charge him.’

‘But, sir —’ Sansi protested.

His sentence was cut short by a flashbulb going off in Jatkar’s windows. At the same moment, both windows exploded inwards in a shower of glass, and a blast of hot air invaded the room, followed by the deafening crack of an explosion.
